This is my first post on this board, I live in Texas now but am from Ventura co and spent my first half of my life fishing Baja and cali coast. The winds are starting to slow and our season is just starting and we have high hopes for another great year. The winter tuna fishing was off the charts when we could get out to the Floaters, Nothing like 100lb top water YFTs. I didn't want to come on here without any fishing news and picks so there it is. I am Wacker on 2cool fishing on the Texas board or You can use the name my parents gave me(Jim Stewart) I don't know if it is cool to post any conservation threads on here or not so if this get poofed I understand. I found some disturbing news the other day saying that we might loose one of our most prolific fishing areas on the Texas coast and some more places in the Pacific and the Atlantic. I will post a news article and a link to a petition that I started so If you folks see fit take 30 seconds to help our sport out.http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90766237 http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-the-recreational-fisherman.html http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-the-recreational-fisherman.html
OK I am done whoring myself out. thanks for your time guys and I pray you guys don't lose anymore ground on you MPA battle. Oh I am not part of any group other than a American sportsman like many of you.

Been following the latest on on your situation in the Gulf and it is looking like too much is taking plkace behind closed doors - with no congressional process. Scary stuff. Nice YFT! You have to stalk them?? Is that the reason for the cammo?? :p J/K!!

This is different then MLPA process Bush is considering creating more "marine monuments" under the Antiquities Act of 1906. This law gives the president broad powers to protect areas of "historic or scientific interest" without congressional approval, or public hearing. He signs the law and the reserve is created, no recourse, no meetings no debate, done deal, no fishing allowed. He's already created the largest marine reserve in history off Hawaii and he's considering signing several more into existence as a legacy gesture. He's hoping that at least the history books will say he made the largest reserves on the planet but of course that completely ignores our right to fish American waters. "If implemented, President George W. Bush could, with the stroke of a pen, protect vast stretches of U.S. territorial waters from fishing, oil exploration and other forms of commercial development. The initiative could also create some of the largest marine reserves in the world ? far larger than national parks like Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon." "The White House is thinking about taking "big steps, not small ones," says Jack Sobel, a senior scientist at the Washington-based Ocean Conservancy, an environmental group." "Conservationists say that CEQ officials last year invited a small number of ocean advocates to an unusual, closed-door meeting to discuss the idea. The White House asked them to help identify potential reserves in waters within the United States' "exclusive economic zone," which extends 200 nautical miles out from the mainland and U.S.-owned islands around the world." In other words Bush is now meeting with the big enviro's much like he met with the oil industry early in his Presidency beh9ind closed doors and they are cooking up a plan to block fishing in massive areas of our territorial waters. To give you an idea of what we're talking about here's the closure off Hawaii:
As you can see it's huge, bigger then the Hawaiian islands themselves and it killed a number of prime sport fisheries including those around Midway Island. Right now we don't know what they are going to target. Right now there's rumors but that is it. Honestly I would not be surprised if the complete channel islands are on the board, Nic, SBI, and Clemente as well, and for all we know Bush could used his unitary executive privileges and the Antiquities act to close the fishing around every island island off our coast. Though may be unlikely they are going to go after some huge areas of US territorial waters without a doubt and the Bush administration is not talking to our side, just the enviros on the issue. I would strongly suggest that anyone who's concerned contact their representatives in Congress. This especially goes for you Republicans because your elected officials will have more say with the current administration. Jim

Well put Mr. Day!
My fear is Hawaii was just a test run, and now the Pew Trust is licking their chops Thinking That was a heck of a lot easier than Blue ribbon panels.

Baja Dreamer, actually I am Naked in that pick, During the winter months I hang out in trees and put meat in the freezer with my bow. My wife was getting tired of washing my clothes so I just got a tattoo!

Welcome!!!

My cousin is a hotel chef and his wife works the front office....they are leaving the big city and hoping to move to Port Mansfield , Texas (south of Padre Island, on the Gulf), to fish and work at the same place.

Any experience with fishing from Port Mansfield?

I understand that in Port Mansfield the locals can ride a horse out into the bay and fish from horse-back......seems like something this Cali boy ought to try.

What do you think?

SoCal,

It will be like stepping back in time, The fishing is outstanding down there! A horse or 4wd is a must but the good thing about a horse is when it breaks down ya got something to eat8*. believe it or not most folks here hold the door open for ya. I wish them the best!
