This weekend will be the kickoff to the serious offshore hunt to locate some Albacore. There will be massive coverage from the code group on trips of 3-8 days in length beginning as early as today with a 6 day on Excel. Also, many of the shorter range boats will be out on day and a half, two day and three day trips.
I've never been on a four or five day at that time. Seems like they have all been later in the season like July, August or September.
Unless the Albacore are going off big time offshore somewhere, you may make the run to the inside to fish Yellowtail on the beach. It's a long run to Cedros and a middle of the day departure will usually put you near the Boiler at Benitos by 3:00 or 4:00 P.M. the following day. From there, the captain can go to Cedros or some spots on the beach to look for Yellows. This type of trip will have jigs in the water looking for tuna on the way down and back up.
I think we'll all have a beter idea in a week or two about how things are going to unfold. Let's hope for a Mother Load of Albacore that shows up and sticks around through the Summer, gets off the speed bait and starts munching Sardines full speed. That's good stuff!
