Took my boy up there for a day of fishing and shooting and had a terrific time.I thought the weather was gonna kill the trip but it only hailed on us a couple of times and it was very cold.My truck said 30 degrees at 2am.Alot of people camping up there. The fishing was the best ive seen in 20 years as it was very easy limits and more. The biggest rainbow was 13 inches and the biggest kern river rainbow was 10 inches. Those kern river rainbows are pretty colorful fish.Took him shootin and they found a huge deer antler that was just in great shape and a good souvenir. We were using a split shot and one salmon egg to get the fish as they would just follow the lures.Always two pound test up there.Anybody have a suggestion on a pole and reel for that type of stream fishing.5000

Sounds like a nice trip! As to your rod & reel question, I use a 5 1/2 foot Ugly Stick Light (c. $45 at Walmart or Bass Pro Shops) with a "Tiny" reel that I paid $15 for at Turner's. You can use just about any reel that will handle 2-lb. line. Stradics are very nice reels with butter-smooth drags, but kinda pricey at $150 or more. Any of the "S" series reels will do you proud.
I've had my Ugly Stick for 20 years or more, and that little "Tiny" reel was likely meant to wear out and fall apart years ago but still kills 5-pound-plus trout with ease. You don't have to spend a ton.

I've been using a Shimano 100Q combined with a BullwhipMK2500 rod for about 10yrs now....I'm sure they're both no longer in production, but it was a perfect setup, especially for 4#.... A couple Years ago I picked up a Sweet 2# Setup at Rick's Sport.Goods...a Quantum XRUL Reel w/Zebco SelectTrout TR502UL Rod.... Good Job on puttin' the Boy out in the Real World & showin' Him the Ropes.... :tu:

As far as I know, there's NO Easy-to-Get-to Lakes for Goldens. But,within a couple Hour Uphill Hike, you could have a shot at them at the 100 Lake basin behind Saddlebag Lake up the Tioga Pass or Algers and asst. little lakes up above the June Loop.Laurel Lakes too,but fishing pressure has about wiped out the Golds.... I've never Fished the Kennedy Meadows area but here is a good Link http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/index.shtml Good Luck... !!!

To get good fishing for Golden trout, you'll have to hike for them. I'd find it hard to believe that they have been fished out. I'd look in the Bear Creek drainage, also up near the middle fork of the Kings River. I've also had success over Bishop pass. (note) all these hikes were multi day in duration, and over 30 miles in length.
