Local Hooping....

638 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  HESBROS
Planning on hooping on saturday nite for the first time, launching out of Oceanside. I never see any hoop reports for carlsbad/encinitas/del mar areas and was wondering if they might produce well. I've seen commercial traps off the Carlsbad power plant, but never tried. Is it any better hooping near further north, near San Onofre or near the barn? Also, any ideas where to jig for macs?
Thanks,
Eric

How bout you just say it's too friggin deep instead of trying to make me look like a dick? I was thinking inside of it might be ok.

WOW!

Eric I was asking you a serious question thinking you may know,
and thinking you could save me some time from having to go look
on the internet to find the exact depth. I don't fish the area
at all and I was considering launching at Dana Point tomorrow
to fish for Halibut, and then I was seriously looking for
somewhere IN THE AREA to drop my hoopnets, somewhere between
50 and 70 feet deep. I was just looking for a little help. SHEEESH!

John,

The bottom is fairly flat with a gradual dropoff in that area. Most of the bottom structure is in the 50-80 foot depth, or maybe a little shallower.

I'm planning on launching out of Dana Point tomorrow morning with my dad and fishing down that way. Probably stopping on a few spots north of the Barn Kelp. Give a call out on 72 if you head down this way.

Eric

EDIT for spelling.

I've ruled out fishing SMB and Catalina.
If I launch it will be at Dana Point, I'll know this evening.
What is your boat name Eric?

JSEA, there is an Artificial Reef south of the Domes and north of the Barn, in aboput 40-50 ft of water. I have never hooped there, but who knows. I may attempt my first time Sunday evening if I get out.
