For macs, I find it better before sunrise. We made all we could use last Sunday, between roughly 4:30 and 5 am.
Sometimes you need to chum with cat food or other stuff to get the bite going. I have found, putting a drop of calico cocktail or hot sauce on each fly can help too. There was no need for chum last Sunday.
For the Halibut guys Jason THOSE SMELT are coveted baits!
That's one of the good things about the bait receivers on the EAST END
of the L.A. Harbor complex, and that's that you find Mackerel, Smelt,
Sardines, and Herring all there at the same time sometimes. Each bait
serves it's purpose as a bait for those that use them for whatever.
As stated above, catfood works great. I usually grind some sardines
periodically and put the stuff in the vacuum pack plastic, then freeze
it, take a couple packetes each trip, in a bucket with a little water,
and chum at will.
