Mini Me has the hot stick today on the Clemente!

I took my son Tristan for his second fishing adventure aboard the afternoon 1/2 day trip on the Clemente out of Dana Point today. The weather was nice and the ocean was calm. It was a perfect day to take the little one out. As soon as we anchored after a 30 min run out, I droped a line to the bottom and handed my son the pole. A few seconds later he was hooked up and brought a calico on board and released him. He was legal but still small so in he went. Put on another bait and handed him off the rod again and instant bendo. This time it was a keeper sand bass. Kept repeating the process throughout the day, boat only made one move to lose a seal, and lots of bendos for Tristan. Total count for the day, 9 sand bass( 5 released), 3 calico bass( 2 released), 3 barracuda(all released), 2 mackeral(released), and 1 sculpin(released). I wanted to teach my son that catch and release is important and after awhile he initiated the release of fish. He made dad proud today. I am glad I wasn't fishing because he would have showed dad up with a count like that. By the end of the day he could catch his own bait, pin on his own bait, hook and land his own fish, and release them. As soon as I can teach him to drop his line in without a birds nest he will be fishing completely on his own. Here is a few of the catch today.

great job! looks like you guys had a blast...the weather and fish cooperated. my best trips are with my three boys; we gotta get out on the saltwater soon.
catch and release is a good thing to teach the youngsters, plus there's no need to clean and bag the fish at the end of the day.:)
Couldn't make it this weekend but that kid sure can fish! Maybe next trip. @(
Looks great, and good on you for teaching catch and release.
I was on that trip too. There were several dads with their kids on their first or second trip. The fish were willing and it seemed like everyone had a good time. Cory certainly supports Catch and Release. I was releasing everything and several times the deckhands wanted to find someone who wanted my fish and Cory told them that if someone wants to release the fish just release it. I released 12 Bass plus 8 or so shorts, 3 pencil cuda, a legal sculpin and a few macs. There was one dad there with his little daughter who had a big WFO tacklebag with rocket launchers that he was keeping rods in and... well, never mind!

Nice job Kurt,

Love seeing the kids hooked on fishing. Your son is a natural.

I was invited to help on a "Freinds of Rollo" trip out of Dana today, but my baby is sick. I was really looking forward to it.

Seeing your post makes me wish I could have made even more.

When are we going to hook up again. Need to just set a date.

Hey Mark,
I remember talking to you. I was going to ask if you weere an Allcoaster but never got to it. BTW, that is my son not daughter. He looks all boy to me! And yes, I am a tackle ho. Don't need that big of a bag on a 1/2 day, but it has cup holders on top for my soda and I never have to travel far to get to extra rods until someone moves them so they can cast. LOL. Great meeting you. It was an excellent day on the water yesterday.

I was thinking about the weekend after next. Let me know if that works for you.
Oops, there was someone else with a little girl. I have an 800XL like your's but I don't use a charter special on it! I like the cupholders on the WFO bags. I end up jamming my coffee cups into the side pockets on the Albacore. Tackle ho? You probably notice that there are a lot of tackle ho's on those boats. Trinidads and Calcutta TE's aren't too hard to come by.

Funny you should say that. The first time I picked the snake up I grab him at the tail end and held it up when it curled upward and tried to bite me so I flung it away and my son decided at that very moment to dart across in front of me and the snake hit him in the back.

I normally use my calcutta on that pole, but I was using it on my other rig because one of my reels are broke. Haven't had the time to take it in yet. I wanted my son to use level winds on both the poles he was using so it would be easier on him. I also had my trini 20 on another rig just in case something bigger was around.
Went out Sunday with my son. There is nothing like it! Loved your story and pics. Thanks for sharing.
