I took my son Tristan for his second fishing adventure aboard the afternoon 1/2 day trip on the Clemente out of Dana Point today. The weather was nice and the ocean was calm. It was a perfect day to take the little one out. As soon as we anchored after a 30 min run out, I droped a line to the bottom and handed my son the pole. A few seconds later he was hooked up and brought a calico on board and released him. He was legal but still small so in he went. Put on another bait and handed him off the rod again and instant bendo. This time it was a keeper sand bass. Kept repeating the process throughout the day, boat only made one move to lose a seal, and lots of bendos for Tristan. Total count for the day, 9 sand bass( 5 released), 3 calico bass( 2 released), 3 barracuda(all released), 2 mackeral(released), and 1 sculpin(released). I wanted to teach my son that catch and release is important and after awhile he initiated the release of fish. He made dad proud today. I am glad I wasn't fishing because he would have showed dad up with a count like that. By the end of the day he could catch his own bait, pin on his own bait, hook and land his own fish, and release them. As soon as I can teach him to drop his line in without a birds nest he will be fishing completely on his own. Here is a few of the catch today.
