My wife wrote me a pass for Monday through Wednesday to fish Catalina. We arrived Monday evening to howling backside winds. Anchored on the front, fished the evening bite, struck out and headed back to the east end in the grey. We fished the usual spots, ended up at the squid grounds and spent our morning catching and releasing 3 HUGE black sea bass (a lot of back breaking work). Tuesday afternoon, after feeding in Avalon, we turned the corner to see some boats hooked up. We drifted through the spot, decided to anchor up, and WHAM! doubles on sea bass! That was fun. We made bait that night, fished in the grey for two more sea bass. As we made our way into Huntington Harbor the DFG boarded us and asked the usual questions, including how many sea bass caught and how many anglers??? OOPS! Two anglers, 4 sea bass = big fat fine...unless, of course, you have your multi-day pass! WHEW! DFG even admitted to salivating when he heard "4 sea bass." Let that be a warning/reminder to invest the $5 and trip to Los Al.
