For me,being in mid 80's,I still enjoy being out on the water, soaking a bait.I enjoy,Newport ,Oregon, the beautiful coast line and great fishing,Leaving my bayside accomodations,at 6A,,on the boat at 6:30..a run of 5 miles or so from the harbor after setting out the crab gear,Limits on rock fish then a return to the dock with 8 to 12 dungeness and limits of fish by 1PM.Crabs cooked, fish filleted and at the the condo back by 2PM,Time to take the wife out for a great dinner before returning to take care of the dungeness.Three days of this ,and a bonus when near shore halibut or offshore albacore are present,Still, great fun and for me,affordable.A 40 pound albacore, fillet cost of 10 bucks vs 70 at San Diego .

Sounds great!

You have a boat in a slip?
not anymore Dave, had boats most of my life starting when I was 10 years old in Maine. Every marina that I can remember, had fish cleaning stations where anglers could care for their fish.I remember,Once, cleaning my tuna in San Diego, many years ago, I may be wrong that facilities were available, I do recall hauling my pickup with several large tuna, under a tarp, iced down to make the 14-hour journey home
I went on a 9-day with a buddy (RIP Bill) back in '97 and we filled the back of his step-side with frozen tuna and yellowtail. Most were 30-60#, but we had one just over 80# and one just under 100#, we tied those tail-up on his headache-rack.

So it's like a half-day boat you take? What's the operation like? I used love fishing the half-days and twilight boats out of Belmont and Seal.

My dad used to take us out now and then.

A boat slip in Newport marina, very expensive, unafordable for me, even when I owned boat. Most party boats in Newport, are 42 footers and hold up to 15 passengers, The boats will fish until they have limits and the come in..I've limited out in 10 minutes, so it doesnt.take longThe majority of trips average about 4 hours for rock fish.longer for salmon and off shore halibut.
i seem to have issues editing my posts,,sorry for that.R

I remember doing that also. My first boats in the late 70's were the GW and City of Seal Beach and the Enterprise and City of Long Beach sportfishing boats. Fun times.

What's a limit up there?

You know the "edit" function is now rather hidden in the upper right-hand corner of your post.

I fished all of those. I probably fished the GW (garbage wagon) morning half-day and the City twilights in the late '80s and '90s when I got sober and went back to school.

That GW was a rock-cod magnet.

I fished the Victory with my dad when it was new.

I fished the Victory too when they used to call the landing off of the 710 & Pico exit in Long Beach Queens Wharf Landing. George the owner captain used to take us out to Horseshoe Kelp when it actually had kelp to fish yellows and barracuda. He also used to fish Rocky Point (off of Marineland) for yellows, bonito, and big calico bass. That's when the bait tank would have a mixture of good 5" - 6" anchovies, brown bait, small Spanish jacks, small greenback mackerel, and pompano. Sardines were not as abundant then, but they did have them.

It's funny there were no Sardine when I was a kid, but great anchovy.

I think when I fished the Victory with my dad, it was out of the original Peirpoint Landing.
A great thing about fishing Oregon, when you get on your boat, all tackle is provided. Rod and reels already rigged and ready to fish, all in rod holders. If you have issues, spare rods are available to use. You never need to bring tackle, I bring a vacuum sealer, package and seal my fillets in my hotel room and freezing them for my trip home. Three days of fishing, about $500 plus cost of motel.
My favorite,Yaquina Bay Charters,Newport Oregon. There were facilities at South Beach that would ship your catch.

I fished out of Depot Bay once when I was a kid and it was like that. We slow-trolled dead bait for salmon, I got (I think) an 11 pound silver.

At that time they would "can" them for you. It was a nice trip.
