If I'm not mistaken the LD series replaced the kg's and made some enhancements. I happened to run across a used kg at a decent price and was wondering if it is worth getting a 15kg to fish 60 pound on? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Graphite frames aren't as strong as aluminum but the 15kg frame is stronger than that of the equivalent TLD30. As I recall, Cal Sheets got a big tuna on one soon after they came out. Should be up to fishing 60#.

The max drag I can get with my 15kg is 14 lbs drag with freespool. If it is a very good deal, and you find a nitch for the reel...(Light trolling for instance) I have not used mine for a long time. Metal frame reels have taken over it's place.

I have used one of these reels for a long time, in fact mine reads as a 30 which came before they went to KG ratings. When I take this reel apart I am impressed with how well everything is built and how little corrosion and other problems inside the reel. Comparing it to a TLD is a disservice as I think Shimano really underbuil those reels and the connection to the blade where you attach to a pole is a constant problem in heavier uses whereas the Penn is very strong. I have gotten big tuna, large yellowtail, marlin and all kinds of fish on this reel and it still keeps on ticking. It does not reel as easy as my Avets because of handle placement and width but the two speed helps some with winching some of those big boys off of the bottom. Most years I use it as 60 but I would not be afraid of putting 80 spectra on there if I needed some capacity.
Drag wise, I have no problem in the 28-30 range, and I think the drags are beefy and well built with lots of good surface.
I definately prefer my avets but if I could find a reel at a good discount I would probably add another to my overstocked arsenal.

I have a 10 kg I used for 50 before I sent it to Cal's. Since then I have fished it with 60, spectra backed. Best fish was a 122# yellowfin
at the rocks.

It is now used sometimes as a back up to my Avets. If you get one I would suggest the Cal's treatment.

I have had one since they first came out.It was sent back to Penn 2yrs in a row.It seized up twice once with a fish on.Once while winding in to check the bait.Penn fixed it both times with out cost but they never explained what the problem was. It's now a wall decoration in my garage.I plan to try it again this year.If the same thing happens again it will become the property of Davey Jones and his locker.
