I won this reel at an auction and wanted to know how you can fish this reel? I mainly fish Catalina and plan to do some short trips later in the year. What rod, spectra, mono work do you mainly use on this reel for each application? How is it for surface iron or yo yo?

that reel is the same that i use for fishing 30lb line on the surface iron. it is a great reel with great freespool. put it on a 8 or preferably 9' jigstick and go fly some iron. it makes a good bait reel for the same pound test but the trend nowadays is a small reel packed with spectra. you could still back this reel with spectra but you would use ALOT of spectra to fill that reel. just fish straight 30lb on that reel for jigs or bait and you won't go wrong. jmho.

If it has a straight handle on it...swap it out for a "angled power handle" this way you can turn the handle over when you have some pressure on the other end. I use it with my surface jig stick on 40 lbs line with spectra backing. It also doubles as my shallow water rock cod jig stick.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. So, basically I could bring two sticks on my Catalina runs--one for surface and one for bottom, and just change them out once we make the switch from YT to rockfish. What stick do you use for the yo yo or bait? I have a custom SD8 for surface.

I like an 8'er like the SD8 for fishing squid with a sliding sinker or leadhead. I caught my first WSB on an SD8 at Catalina. You can certainly yoyo with it too although I prefer a 6.5 - 7'er for yoyo.

For bait,straight 30# Ande Backcountry on a gusa 80 megamag and pull like it's 40#. For a jigstick, straight 40#.
