wanted to work the south side so made the left towards hunnington/ newport beach out of alamitos. no bait just gonna work the plastics.
headed down the ways and i am seeing tons of life out there. dolphins, birds, and bait schools were everywhere. told myself that this is a very good sign.
started to fish Da Pipe since the water temp was up to 64.1. Loaded with fish but got there at the top of the " low " high slack tide and the current was rippin' so i could not stay in the zone with the plastics. if you would have seen my furuno meter, it was lit up but just no takers.
made the bad decision to head out to the triple rigs to get my 2 newbies some rockcod but that didn't pan out. even with 16 oz. of weigh, it did not want to stay at the bottom. scrath this and headed back to the pipe to work the bottom side of the tide.
return to see the Armada of sport boats just hooking cudas left and right. we would have been there in minutes if we did not move to the outside.
started to chuck the irons just by staying put but that was not working for me. i stayed in the outside mainly because i did not want to mess with the party boats. they deserve to make a living and not have some yahoo get right into thier zone.
i can't tell you the attitude or inexperience that people have when they see you chucking irons then they decide to run their boat right in front of you about 20-25 yards away. i have upheld and tried the rules of the water where you do not get into the zone of another person if you are at least 2 long iron/jig cast away. this way we are not impacting each other or have any chance of tangling.
i stayed at the outside and waited till the cudas would move then i would run and chuck irons at them. my first hook up was very unusual as this fish was just rippin' line off of my trini 20 like i didn't have drag at all. i looked back at my 2 partners and told them that this did not feel like a cuda. i have caught my share in my lifetime and i know the telltale sign of a cuda fight. this one just ripped underneath the boat like a bat out of hell. fought it for about 10 minutes and then it started off again and ssssnnnnaaappp ... it was gone. i was glad for the fight because that just gave me renewed energy.
started to gun the boat again, set up just outside the birds that are looking down and start to sling the irons. burning the iron on the top and seeing the cudas boil on it is very cool to me.
7 hits with the cuda hitting the side of my iron trying to slice up the bait before they come back for the big eat but only brought in 2, with my partner bringing in only 1 with a swimmie. nice one too.
the school of cudas sank out and it was over. this was about 12ish and the fleet dispersed. we headed back to the pipe and once again, metered a bunch but just could not hold the bottom.
why do i not throw the hook? lazy for the most part, don't enjoy staying on one spot on anchor. besides , i hate pulling up the anchor.
newbies went home with enough fish for ceviche for their families and life is good. i don't really keep any fish so thats all good. had a great time on the water and was able to enjoy the company.
