San Clemente Island report from 4-14-8
Made the run over to SCI on Wed. Stopped at Catalina and picked up a scoop of squid and headed to the Pyramid area for Calicos. Conditions were not right so we ran around China Point on the back side, anchored up and picked at a few calicos but nothing exciting. The wind was starting to pick up so we made a move outside and fished 180 to 240 feet for rockfish while we could. By noon the backside became pretty much unfishable as the wind must have been blowing close to 20mph. We caught plenty of nice rockfish by then so we went inside the Pyrimid area and drifted around for a while for nothing. The wind was really blowing around the East End so we headed around the corner and up the the frontside toward the West. As soon as we came around the corner, the weather became a hot summer day. What a huge change. Sweatshirts came off and it was hot. Off in the distance all we could see were huge bird schools which turned out to be mega macks and really big meatballs of giant chovies. Closer in to the Island both Calicos and macks were attacking the meatballs of bait. We stopped along the way and caught some calicos and whitefish. We ran a couple more miles up the Island and it was more of the same. At 4pm we decided to head back to Newport but just then the Yellows decided to come up so we chased them around for a while tossing the iron at them. After a few tosses I hooked a nice one on a 6x jr but after a couple minutes the hook pulled. It was getting late and the wind was still blowing off the Island so we headed in. The wind was blowing pretty good until we got about 12 miles away from the Island where it died and became glassy. Looks like the ocean should be nice and calm for the next several days. The sea temps are finally rising. Can`t wait to get out again. Sorry no pics today. Dave 28 Farallon HOOKED
