We launched the boat at about 6:00 am, at Dana Pt Harbor. Left the harbor to try to catch some mackerl for bait. We had a little trouble finding the mack's but eventually made about 10-12 mack's.
We dumped the jigs in about 8:30 and started trolling, and trolling and trolling... at 11:30 we got bit and the fight was on. After 2 hrs we decided that this was a big fish and we didn't bring a flying gaff. Got on the radio and asked if anyone could help us by letting us borrow their flying gaff. Special Thanks to the guts on the "South Bend" for letting us borrow their flying gaff. The Thresher died out under the boat and we we able to land the fish in just over 2.5 hrs. At the weigh station, some guys that were weighing their fish (210 lb) said that we should keep our fish in the boat becuase their's was going to eat our's. Well when we were finally able to drag the fish from the other side of the boat and up on the dock, The guy at the dock told them that our fish was probably 100 lb bigger. The thresher taped out to 11'2" head to tail and weighed 296lbs. This was the first Thresher we caught in our boat.

Wow awesome fish. I just posted a report from Friday saying that my cousin and I had a thresher come up behind our boat but could not hook up. I can?t quit wondering how big the one we saw was. All we saw was the tail smacking our lures and it looked about the same size as yours. I was not sure how we would land such a big fish from our 20? boat with only a normal gaff. Much respect as my boat and set up is similar to yours but you came home with one. Great job and great report.

We were trolling 3 BoM's Pink, Blk/purple. and orange/chart./red/pink. The thresher took the OCRP BoM trolling at about 40 ft @ 2.5 mi/hr. The thresher was hooked about 16" from the end of the tail. This was our first thresher and we thank a few people that helped on the radio. I didn't realize that when the fish was directly below the boat that it had died out. A guy on the radio said that the t-shark was dead and to tighen the drag to get him up, otherwise we would have been a while longer in trying to land. We didn't realize just how big the shark was until we had him up to the boat. Still learning the art of shark fishing...

Funny you mentioned that, we had just finished steaking the T-shark out and were hosing down the bloody mess, when two police cars rolled up. The officer had asked if we were cleaning fish, yeah just one big one. I live on a hill and when the blood washed down the street one of the neighbors at the bottom of the street thought some got killed.

Thanks

I'm happy for you guys and I'm sure you guys spent a good amount of time on steaking that T out. NICE! :tu:

My friends and I troll B.O.M.'s without hooks and use them as teasers. When one gets smacked, we bait a mackeral with a circle hook and toss it back immediately and wait for the T to come around and eat it. The fight is much better with a mouth hook and they don't sink out. It also gives us the opportunnity to release them when we want to. 8)
