In just over 2 months I will be taking my second 5 day trip. After that tirp, I will go from knowing less than nothing to nothing. When I started planning these trips from TN to SD, I was told that it was contagious and they were right.

So, I am now planning on a longer trip for 2009 and have set a minimum trip at 8 days and a max at 10. At this point I prefer quantity and variety to quality. I haven't found a large enough cane pole nor a cricket big enough to lure a cow tuna.

Please discuss the merits of the spring longer trips to the early fall trips. Also, I would especially like to hear specific boat/trip recommendations. I know Wahoo and Willy have a spring 8 day trip.

Thanks in advance for your help.

What species do ya wanna catch? The skiff trips are a blast and you can C&R 100+ fish a day. You might only land one big tuna on an October G'lupe trip but you'll never forget it. (Visions of the Taxman haunt me).

HD, On my one trip so far, we went kelp hopping and caught YT and Dorado and I had a blast. My dream is a wahoo, but I would put variety and quantity over a specific fish. I would take 4 50# fish over 1 200# fish, at this point. I suspect I will change as I get more experience but that is what I need, experience tugging on my string. Remember, I know just a bit more than nothing.

Willy's 8 day in late june...I've been on it 5 times....last time the JP was a 150# yft caught at Alijos we also caught a 65# wahoo.....the Rooster is a top of the line boat with a great crew and you are going with some of the nicest and most experienced LR guys around ...willy and wahoodad...you'll learn as much as you want to learn....hop on board I promise you'll have a good time..... On all the trips we have had wide open yt fishing at Cedros and Thetus Bank....I remember once on the way home the skipper John Grabowski metered a huge school of albacore and we had lots of bait so he told the deckhand to throw full scoops of dines to bring them up...the ocean erupted....and we landed over 250 BIG albacore( 30# to 45#) before everyone just gave out and the only ones fishing were the deckhands.....John then said well if no one wants to fish we're going home....we left them biting.....

Since it's planned for 09, keep an eye out to what happens in 08. Have a feeling you're going to do this already. Having said that... through the years, it depends on if it is a warm or cold water year, El Nino or La Nina somewhat. I think we have a La Nina condition now. Some spring trips will put you on Wahoos and better than little YFTs, some not. The Shogun, I think, has been on a Spring eight this year for YTs and baby YFTs, no Wahoos. Have to wait and see what this Spring trips coming up bless us with. They may be the first to get on the BFTs and Albacore. Fall trips, I feel, you have a better shot at Wahoos, larger YFTs, Grouper, Pargos, Dorados, maybe other Tuna types if they stick around (has happened). There will always be YTs, Spring or Fall. Every year is different. Last years early Fall trip, Alijos/upper Ridge was the slowest I've ever seen. We got lucky, Billy put us on great YFT fishing on a bank farther south before the weather went snot, then up to Cedros and area for outstanding YT fishing. My 01 Fall trip was insane everywhere Frank took us, quantity AND quality. There is always Cedros/Benitos and areas both Spring and Fall. I think the option of Lupe is more likely in the Fall. I go on a Fall every year since 88(?), all different. May try to go on a late Spring this year if life doesn't get in the way. If I were to choose just one, it would be in the Fall. (*), as in, I take no responsibilities if I'm wrong on my .02 cents. WTF! Where's the cent symbol on the keyboard? I live about a three hour drive to the landing, I can only imagine your pain. Depends on the year, right place, right year, right time. REK.

Fall 10 day trips are pretty cool. Usually round goes... Alijos Rocks for Big tuna for 3 days. Hit the Wahoo from there or on the way to Alijos hit the paddies for Wahoo and Dorado.

Then Groupers and Yellow Tail at Benitos and Cedros. I've even had wide open Sand Bass and Calico on the last day. :)

10 days gives you flexibility to make changes to the fishing plan as the fish and water conditions do change.

Harddrive.

Variety = fall 10 day, pure and simple. Yellowtail, yellowfin, dorado, wahoo, maybe even a pargo bite or some grouper, I'm smiling just typing this list out. :p An 8 day spring trip will be YT, maybe YF, maybe BF. I've done 3 of these and they're fun but not the variety you're after. Early/mid October would be ideal. Narrow your choices down to just one or two boats and see what you can get a spot on, luckily the sour economy has made finding a spot easier. In my personal opinion, call Tracy at the Royal Star first, if Tim's available talk to him about what you're looking for. They'll set you up and you WILL be happy.

I also go on a 6 day fall trip and yes the fishing can be great...but you mentioned the early spring trip that's why I gave you details of my experenices with the spring trip.....the only problem with fall is possible storms from the south.... it is still hurricane season till late October...jmo.

The "traditional" response to a question like yours would be to go on an October 10 day trip. Best chance for wahoo and a good chance for 100-150# YFT as well as lots of other varieties and all the YT you want. Unless conditions(weather, water temps) indicate otherwise, that is still the way to go. Book early, tho!

Jon, if you want to catch a Wahoo, go on that early October 10 day. That's your best shot. Looks like your current favorite boat starts the 8 and 10 day trips at the end of September.

But, since I want to fish with you and have decided to do the Willy and Wahoodad tour of trips, I want to invite you to come fish with us next year on the Red Rooster III on the 8 day June/July.

Jon you would be welcome on our 8 day late June/early July of 2009. We always have a great group of guys/gals. This year we have 4 sets of couples going. The reason I have been told is that the group is very friendly and we make a concerted effort to teach and make sure all have a great time. We have excellent sponsors and giveaways. This year 1 Super Seeker and a Seeker EX Graphite rod. The boat is great a long with the crew! We have caught everything from Bluefin to Albacore to epic YT fishing. Throw in that quality YFT at Alijos and an occasional wahoo and you have what we catch. The other great item is that the trip is before the summer/fall prices kick in so it is priced very well. If you have any questions, email or PM me and I will do my best to help you feel comfortable about our trip.

Hope this helps.

I have just begun the Willy/Wahoodad tour with the 10 day this year on Intrepid in November. Jim Hall and I are both on the Angler 6/13-20 this year but plan on going on the Rooster next year. Jim has always wanted to fish this boat and it's been since November of '04 since I was aboard so we're due.

Steve, I think you just sealed the deal and then you get Mr. Casper to put his $.02 in. The opportunity to fish with you, Willy and David is just too much to turn down. I need all of the hands on training I can get. Maybe I will just join the Wahoodad/Willy tour starting next year. Should I wait to send a deposit in until after this coming trip?

Today is my birthday and I got some great Costa Del Mar's with the bi-focals (yes I am old) as well as a cool Offshore Angler water proof bag with some Blackwater floro and a cool hand gaff for moving your fish around at the end of the trip.

"Maybe I will just join the Wahoodad/Willy tour starting next year. Should I wait to send a deposit in until after this coming trip?" We could do a lot worse. I'm not sure how long I'll be staying with the tour as we're looking at doing a longer trip late '09 or early 2010. Actually we're thinking about moving to the Excel for something like 14-15 days. Rooster would be good for that, too, and if we take the right trip on the Rooster, we won't have to change tour guides.;):p If the guys repeat the Intrepid 10 day in '09 that should be a good one, too. Probably 11/14-24/09?

The Intrepid trip details are being worked out for 09. We do a Rooster trip second half of January each year as well. 15 day trip.
The November 2008 trip will be epic and if the fish bite it will be over the top!
