If fished last week at Catalina you had great timing with it apexing for all including cattle boats on Saturday. Congratulations to all who set a new mark on personal best! If you landed a 40-60 lb fish hopefully that experience will hold you over till next spring at Catalina, school fish and larger should bite in July on the full moon at channel islands next if you must go again. Quote of the week comes from a sportboat that landed 62 fish, "all nice slug fish, mostly all females loaded with eggs" I guess the Seabass have the bad timing

Given the rarity of such an event and the fact that WSB already have the tightest possible restrictions...I think you've effectively provided those pushing complete closures on us with a bit more ammo. Thanks.

Personally, my "TIMING" continues to support the spawn and although I will NOT give up, I feel confident those lucky enough to be in the right spot at the right time, appreciate the experience. The "limit" of 1 and the support of the hatchery program is proving the viability of the WSB, and the fishery appears strong. The only thing I don't like to read is (quote from another site) "we continued to catch 20 WSB (after limits) looking for YT. IF I ever get lucky enough to limit the boat...I'm either moving OR running in to show off!

Moosehead,

Indeed the timing is bad for the fish as anglers are taking scores of large breeders during a time when they are at their most vulnerable. Imagine the amount of fry those fish would have contributed to the population if they had lived.I was in Brasil and wanted to do some sport fishing but my guides were like "NO WAY" as it was breeding season for the fish and we would have all been arrested by authorities.:

If I had my way I would close the season entirely during the spawn. No take what so ever for WSB during the spawning months. The rest of the year I'd leave the 3 fish limit in place. But I'm sure that's just me.
Good post moosecabeza! CK

It really does not matter if we follow the DFG Regulations 100%. What most of you dont get is they need no ammuntion to shut down sportfishing, they are going to do it no matter what. Stop your snieveling about a legal catch and enjoy what little time we have left to truly enjoy our sport. It does not matter wether you catch and release, fresh or salt, fish artificals or your a fly fisherman we are all involved in the same sport. You wanna save it then get in the game and work towards a solution. There are several fine groups out their right now that need all the help they can get. The best way to send a real message is with a vote to oust who ever is appointing these pinheads that are making the decisions. But dont bash a fellow fisherman for being with in the parameters of the laws. Thats like driving 90 mph and screaming at a guy doing the speed limit. Great catch guys enjoy the moment, looks like a few Allcoast members have you in their sights!

I agree about the 20 released after limits. They say they dont release well after a good fight.. How many of those WSB survived I wonder?? I hope some of them.

I was on the Island Tak this past weekend and we had a 9 fish limit in less than 10 minutes. When the last one hit the deck Steve Kelly said that's it we are out of here. Do "not" put another bait in the water these fish do not release well. Off we went looking for Calico but came across another school of white seabass at which time Steve said oh darn looks like we have to keep going even though there were calico in the area. Now that is a great Captain. Leave some for another day.:tu::tu::tu: to the Island Tak

Steve Kelly is indeed a Captains Captian!! Me I was on the Freedom on Saturday and we limited in an hour on the Back side of Catalina. Went to Clemente NADA! Went back to Catalina on Sunday--double Nada. So I took my $350 (plus tips and cleanig etc.)fish and went home.

...great post. This is why Steve Kelly and his boat has been the king of the white ghost for the past decade.
