Anybody know anything about the surf fishing at Avila Beach? Worth taking a rod and giving it a try? I'll be there with the family over the weekend and MAY:p be able to slip away in the early AM.

Not much for surf there as I remember. There is a pier at Avila I fished once. I didn't catch anything but it was a good place to sit and take in the bay. I expect there may be some perch there and maybe a stray halibut. I was at Pismo pier once when there was a real active perch bite. They were the biggest I have seen. Pismo is just down the road a bit and is more on the open ocean beach.

Thanks Mark. My wife and I stopped by there about two weeks ago on our way back from SLO. I did notice at that time that there was virtually no surf on the beach. I think the only thing I saw being caught were largeish sardines on the south pier. I didn't think about Pismo, thanks for the info.

I fish Avila for one week in June every year. altough there is not much surf I have caught some of the biggest BSP I have ever seen from the south pier. All the locals fish for the horse dines and small macks. I like to throw a 6" camo gulp worm from the south side of the pier right up on to the beach and drag it slowly up along the pillings. I have also heard that later in the summer there are alot of halibut, it might be worth a try putting out one of those dines that are easy to snag on a sabiki rig. Good luck. On a side note if you like wine dont miss Salisbury winery. The tasting room is an old school house and the family are some of the nicest people and they make some great wines.
Enjoy.
Sean.

Thank you Sean. I was thinking about the sardines and what might be out there trying to eat them. Saw a small boat working in tight to the beach slow trolling. I'm guessing dragging the bottom looking for the flat ones judging by the bend in their rods in the holders.

My wife and I do enjoy a good glass of wine...might give the winery a look time permitting.:tu:

Just a follow-up. I did fish the pier area north to the river mouth for nada. Didn't spend too much time. I didn't get a chance to try the flatties near the boat launch, but did drive over and take a walk on the pier with the kids. Saw the area referred to, but didn't see anybody fishing it. Avila looks like a great place for the kayaker and/or float tuber...lots of visible kelp and rocks in tight to the beach. The fish market on the north pier had a bunch of fresh surf perch. The guy there said they had come in in the AM...this was on Saturday. Apparently from a local spot. A few of those perch were real jumbos.

Thank you all for your contributions.
