fishing Sitka or Juneau or Ketchikan

My wife is finally getting her cruise to make up for all the time I have been away fishing. We are headed to Alaska for 10 days and will be making several stops. Three of the stops (Sitka, Juneau, and Ketchikan) offer half day salmon fishing as a shore excursion. I have been "allowed" to fish one of them.

If you had to choose only one of them to fish and the other two to do the "tourist stuff" which would they be and why?

I appreciate any info/insight you can give. It is both of our first time in Alaska and are clueless as to what to see and do, etc.

Thanks in advance

Hello, Ryan. All three of the mentioned ports can be good fishing spots, but I'd personally recommend Sitka or Ketchikan. I live in Juneau and fish here alot. The fishing in Sitka and Ketchikan is better than Juneau's. Juneau will have plenty of tourist activities anyhow. I'm sure that you'll be bombarded with tour options on the ship. I hear that the heli tours of Mendenhall Glacier are pretty fun, though I've never done one. There are a bunch of whale watching tours, but I see that stuff every weekend myself in my boat. If you're interested in mining history, there is also a short mine tour above town. If you need more info, e-mail me. Enjoy your trip.

Good Fishing,

I agree with Zing - only I would go one step further in saying that Sitka has great fishing and not a whole lot more. I fished out of there last year with KingFisher and we had a great trip. So fish Sitka and recreate in Juneau and Ketchikan.

Thanks for your input.

We have scheduled the Sitka trip based on the information reveived here and also some vendors at the Fred Hall Boat show.

My son (7yrs) talks of almost nothing else and we are a couple of months out.

Fish Sitka and do the excursions in Juneau and Ketchikan. Not only does Sitka provide the best fishing of the 3 it has the least amount of other things to do.
In Juneau I have taken the float plane and done a salmon bake, did dog sledding and would recommend both. Lots to do downtown in Juneau for the wife also--shopping and decent restaurants.
In Ketchikan I did a bear viewing trip at Annan Island and would highly recommend that. (spent 10 days in Juneau and Ketchikan two years ago)
In Sitka--where I will be going in 3 weeks---I just fish. After 2 days of fishing should have a freezer full of salmon and halibut for the barbque in the summer.

wifezilla and i took a northbound 7 day cruise two years ago and after 2 days at sea, seattle college girls who go up there for summer employment sure were a welcoming sight for sore eyes!!! I never enjoyed standing in line waiting for my coffee as much as I did in Skegway. LOL
