Just replying to the the guys asking Q's about Tahiti fishing....
All islands I went to had pretty much all the species you want to catch - Black/Blue Marlin (The guy running the Huahine charter just posted a 780 Blue) Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin, Wahoo, Jacks, Blue Runners and even Opah (Moonfish in Tahiti) and tons of Skippies (you'll see lots of people selling these on the streets every day). You don't have to go too far offshore as the bottom drops off abrubtly just beyond the barrier reef to thousands of feet deep. I could see guys outside trolling from our room every day. There aren't any beaches for surf fishing on the outer islands but Tahiti has quite a few but I didn't see anyone fishing from shore. I fished off the decks of our overwater bugalows on the outer islands and caught several kinds of small reef fishes but the bigger stuff was out in the passes and the channel inside. I took one of the 3 man outriggers out and trolled in the deep channel for a few small Ulua but I was told there's some toads to be had by the locals.
Bring lotsa Crockodiles and Rapalas (all sizes)
Also, If you walk out on the reefs fishing wear THICK booties as was I was told by almost all the hotel folks that there's Stonefish out there not to mention huge Urchins.

Have Fun!

A few year back in Moorea, I was fortunate to fish with an American who set up his own charter business there. We caught striped marlin, which, according to the skipper, was a very rare catch. Boated 3 that day. I wanted to release all of them, but the skippers sell them to the hotels, so he was adamant about keeping them. :-(

We saw some huge yellowfin jumping, but could not catch up to them. They were easily over 150#. For pure nonstop action, the skipjack are hard to beat. Some of them push 25# and up.
